Enrich the Work Environment by Improving Your Relationship with the Employees

Whether you are the owner or the manager at your place of work, the relationship you have with the staff is crucial for a successful business. You want to be personable without fading the line between friends and employees. You also want to protect yourself, as well as them, from unpleasant circumstances like fraud or theft, but it all needs to be done in a respectful way that shows these people how much you appreciate them.

Set Boundaries

Every business needs rules. Make a list of expectations and post it where all employees can see it. Don’t back down on any of these issues. It will undermine your authority. If it is a rule you don’t think you’ll enforce, it is better left off the list. You also need to consider an employee dishonesty bond to protect everyone from fraud, theft, and other dishonest acts. You can find help with this from professionals like those at

Draw a Line

It is extremely hard to be friends with your employees. Once a closer, more personal relationship is established, it will be harder to play the part of the boss. Most people are genuinely honest, but keep in mind that there are some that will take advantage of you. Don’t be rude or detached. It is wonderful to show a genuine interest in those around you, but be cautious while setting up distinct lines between work and your personal relationships.

Show Gratitude

Everyone needs to be reminded that they are doing a good job. Don’t skip the praise when it comes to your employees. An added perk to showing your gratitude is the fact that most people are more likely to perform at their best when they feel appreciated. This doesn’t mean you have to give out big bonuses or lavish the staff in gifts. A simple “thank you” goes a long way.

Trust, honesty, and appreciation will make any employee feel better about themselves as well as their boss. Put these practices into motion in order to ensure a balanced work environment that you can all enjoy. Keep in mind that having a staff that respects you, finds happiness in their work, and feels safe can be one of your biggest assets.
